Selena Gomez Is Seriously Obsessed With Hoop Earrings, And We Heart It!

Images from Selena’s instagram feed.

The internet is on fire again this time with the news that Selena Gomez split from The Weeknd after 10-months. That’s about…three years in Hollywood. And what’s more, there is an unconfirmed rumor that she’s getting back together with Justin Bieber. Is it true?? We’ll let the web sort it out. One thing we’re sure about though is that while her relationship status and boyfriend might change, her commitment to the hoop earring is strong! We couldn’t help but notice, of course, that it’s the one accessory she’s always working into her looks and we think it’s cool that hoop earrings are her thing. And appreciate her commitment to them through thick and thin.

So here are some of our picks inspired by Selena Gomez and her hoop-la.

Rainbow Accessories Alert: This Trend Could Change Your Whole Look

What’s your favorite color? We hope it’s all of them because rainbow accessories have become the choice look for outfit extras. And we don’t mean a whimsical splash of three hues here and there. The designs are bright, bold and very purposeful—as in a crystalized multi-color swirl icing cupcake bag. If your closet is ready to taste the rainbow, here are some pieces to help you wear it too.

Nashville: Secret Designer Shopping Spot

If you have been following me on instagram this month, you know that I’m back in the my old southern stomping grounds. From Nashville to Atlanta and St. Simons. My stop back in Nashville to see dear old friends has me wishing I was headed back… I have been hearing for a couple of years about how the city is undergoing a renaissance, but little did I know to what extent.  There’s a whole new hipster crowd, some imported from Brooklyn, of course. This seems to be concentrated in the Belmont- Vanderbilt area….East Nashville.  There is a decidedly country spin on organic healthy living coupled with the way Nashville does the arts and music that I find comforting.  The historic homes all over the city are being renovated or sadly in some cases torn down. The new construction is everywhere from communities to detached modern style homes.  I will say I did not see any extremely tall buildings while there this round, also a comfort.

Some of My Favorite Neighborhood and Their Vibes:

Belle Meade:

Belle Meade is still well established homes in an appointed sprawling area welcoming us with a horse and ample roads, quietly meandering to homes with large yards. The area is a mix of mansions and older mid century as well as ranch homes.

Richland-West end:

Has an old luxurious history vibe of well established money and has attracted a mix of successful creative types.

Belmont / 12th:

This is the area I stayed in this trip. My friend’s homes are amazing, but with beagle in tow I decided to give them some personal space. My arbnb was right in the heart of the historic bungalows, with walkability to 12th Avenue south and Hillsboro village shopping.  It is a fun area with a young style and it seems to be also currently under construction, with newer homes and mostly historic renovations happening. Belmont was once the home of America’s riches woman, Adelicia. The area derives the name from that historic site.

Green Hill- Hillsboro area:

This is the sort of higher end shopping destination. Green Hills is near Belle Meade with homes starting a bit more accessibly and in the style of Bungalows and Cape Cods.

UAL (United Apparel Liquidators est. 1980)

While there are lots more area neighborhoods to explore, the point of my post today is to introduce you to one of my secret favorite spots to hunt couture and designer pieces at a mere fraction of the cost. No this is not the American Picker’s shop, but don’t forget to stop in there if you are a fan. While talking to the owner and taking pictures, one of the customers said “How fun, but don’t go letting too many people know”.  This is the general consensus about UAL. This brand is a southern staple with locations in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi… And why is that you may ask? The deep discounts on Marni, Escada, Prada, Givenchy, Zac Posen,Rag and Bone, Lanvin and frankly whatever new designer piece that comes in- which for some reason did not sell. Thus the over flow was sent to them.  Their shoe section, bags, and especially jewelry is well stocked.

You can find the Chanel bags and rarer things in the cases. New and older established high end jewelry around the counter. While there is a dig style feel to the shop in some ways, once you scratch the surface you realize what is there! The inventory and brands carried change frequently and you never know what you might find. After a close friend and Nashvillite showed me this store years ago it has been on my must stop in list every year.  What is nice is the really young new vibe to the store’s selection. These pieces somehow are not the total cast offs and bad designs. They are hip!

My online picks. Jewelry selection here is also not too shabby. I have a mind to buy those Rosie earrings right now!

How deep are the discounts: Well something that retails for 1000 maybe 200 or something that is 300 may go to 60.  Not to mention if you catch their sales on top of those prices.  They have 2 Nashville locations one in the West End and another in Hillsboro Village as well as an online site. Nothing compares to being there in person to score the deals!

So here are some images of my shopping trip to the West End location in the hopes I’ve added a secret Nashville source to your list:

Accessories Talk: NYFW SS17 Best of the Bags

Loving this bag strap! Rachel Guillaume photo for Sarara Couture. SS17 street style.

It’s extremely hard to admit that indeed, I was not that into bags until well through college. There I said it.  Maybe I just used my “school” bag so much (pause for gasp) I just never used anything else, but my jean pockets and that, gulp, book bag. It was the 90s I blame it on that….. Then when I moved to Brazil that all changed. I did my doctorate there in the early 2000s. It was then that I got back into the creativity and joys that fashion design has to offer. Maybe it was the fresh coconut water, fruit availability, the music, Copacabana, the walks, bus rides ( you need to carry your stuff around when you don’t have your own car)…. or maybe it was just their take on bags; from bohemian styles, straw bags, recycled plastics to various color options.  I’d always loved jewelry and that whole history that comes with it, but “the bag” had meant nothing to me. Then all of a sudden I had…well let’s just say more than 10 where there had been only 1 or 2. I began to use the objects I once thought only utilitarian to add something to my wardrobe as well, I figured out they were yes….accessories!

What does this have to do with fashion week? Glad you asked. On the streets during this time can be found one of the biggest free for all, eye candy shows of amazing bags to behold.  The bloggers, stylists, designers, models, fashion fanatics, just whip out everything from the latest Chanel or Gucci to unique vintage finds.  What did we spot this time? Glad you asked…yet again:)  There were some themes in terms of modern lines, smaller shapes, chains and grommets, metallic details, lucite, color block bags, interesting shapes and even surprises.  We shot lots of inspiration images on the streets for you to wet your whistle with and get those creative juices flowing next time you are pursuing a new purse. Now some of these are in the higher investment piece area in terms of price. I have also included some ideas that are priced less.

Accessories Talk: The Shoe Lined Streets of NYFW SS 17

ss17-nyfw-9-10-21

New York Fashion Week Moment. Photo by Rachel Guillaume for Sarara Couture.

Every season, what I most look forward to are the accessories we see on the streets. Some of those of course are entering the shows.   Now, it is true that of a few of these are given by the designers to the wearers and represent the runways.  However, the unique interpretations we see outside each fashion week keep us smiling and inspiring. I love what the the models wear in between shows, their own interpretations, the writers, the editors etc.  It’s not about the “trend”, but about how everyone makes their own looks using these little accessories gems.  There were some definite themes and some fun inspiration possibilities this season.  Designers were mixing it up with straight off the runway fall collection availability and change was in the air. We saw metallics shoes and accents, cat eye styles and mirrored sunglasses (hail to the 80s and 90s -yes I remember these- as a baby;) #iwish #oldish), stripes, things also were a bit punk or studded, light denim was about, handbags are smaller and belts are big again, just to summarize a few things we spied. What I love about street style, is in the way everyone seems to be in a rhythm….giving us hints about fashion weeks to come….Yet showing us what can be made wearable. Yes it is a high stakes game, but there are true flashes of brilliance and realism there too.

This time we wanted to pull together some looks we spotted and coveted by accessory type, giving readers some alternatives as to where to find those piece or something similar they desire. There is always a lot of vintage used during fashion week which I applaud, so we will do our best to discuss a few options! One thing is for sure this fall and coming spring seems to be all about the shoes. Embroidered, colorful, metallic, studded, metal details…..it’s time to pamper your foot.

Fashion Week Accessories Street Style 2016- Personal Favorites!

Street shot, now I must say turquoise is a personal favorite color so I cannot get enough. Hannan Saleh image.

Street shot, now I must say turquoise is a personal favorite color so I cannot get enough. Hannan Saleh image.

I’ve already wrapped up our street style and SS 2016 accessories forecast report for New York on and off the runway…. However; I really couldn’t get enough of street style this season, so I decided to conclude my accessories inspiration extravaganza with some of my favorite looks as shot by the lovely Hannan Saleh, for us at Sarara Couture.  I think a blogazine like this one, needs to showcase how individuals interpret and wear jewelry, hats, bags, shoes, rings and beyond.

I love personalized items- that is pieces that we find that speak to us for whatever reason.... Hannan photograph. 2016

I love personalized items- that is pieces that we find that speak to us for whatever reason…. Hannan photograph. 2016

Why do we wear accessories? What role do they play in our daily lives. For some of us we have a fear of them and how to wear them, for others they are part of the dialogue that makes us who we are. I am one who feels naked without them.  Accessories are truly part of our material culture- physical objects that offer clues about our cultures and ideologies. They speak to our roles in society, beliefs, gender and status…. I think as the international fashion week scene wrap up and Paris begins and ends there is still a bit more room for a little New York inspiration.  This city offers a panorama of visual stimulus and messages through accessories.  Hannan has a great eye for those moments, so enjoy a curated look at my personal favorite NYFW street style highlights from SS 2016. These are the things I would wear, inspire from and adore regardless of the trends.  All below images were shot by Hannan- so let’s discuss-

Walk Like An Egyptian Red Carpet Style-Harley Viera Newton for Judith Leiber

skull bag Leiber

Image via Judith Leiber.com/Rights Reserved. Couture skull bag.

So, I admit I have a love – hate thing with Judith Leiber bags. I either love them, especially her 1970s clutches or it just doesn’t do it for me. That said, I kind of feel that this is due to custom nature of the designs, it is meant to be that way- a bag sort of speaks to you or doesn’t. One of my favorites designs features a snake as seen below. Examples of the 70s styles include both crystal and exotic skin bags. Judith Leiber was a pioneer in terms of women designing bags, as the first woman accepted into the handbag guild. She has been creating these accessories for first ladies and the red carpet since 1953 (Her company was officially founded in 1963). Now in her 90s, and a survivor of the holocaust, she is an inspiration.  Judith moved to New York with her husband and focused on her dreams. I personally remember learning about her time working with one of my favorite accessories designers- Nettie Rosenstein. Her bags are now in various museum collections like the Met, as well as her own official one located in East Hampton. The Judith Leiber museum contains over 900 bags. Since many designs were limited or couture, the museum must be still searching some of the rarer ones to add to that archive.

As of more recent years something which bridges fashion accessories and the Judith Leiber vintage designs seems to be happening. Who could forget the cupcake bag via Sex and the City…..Well, that was just the beginning of a sort of renewed interest in the designs. Today, in part this is due to the appointment of Ana Matheson as creative director.

This rejuvenated interest in her bags, includes a whole new young client base, and you can see this in the choice of designs as of late. Per this bag, front and center on the website- called the  BELA LAUGOSI  Skull bag. The company seems to be producing some fashion forward couture bags which bridge the gap between past and present.

The newest endeavor for S/S 15 is pure fashion fun. Harley Viera Newton, a New York DJ, model by trade and a new fashion favorite worked with the iconic bag company to create a couture collection. She describes her discovery of Judith Leiber in the recent Elle magazine interview.

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 4.47.11 PMJudith Leiber Couture Collection via ModaOperandi.com

Vintage accessories lovers can relate to her enthusiasm and most have at least one of Leiber’s bags in their collection.  ModaOperandi.com has the Harley collaboration for preorder now exclusively. One thing you will notice is what a bargain the 70s snake bag may seem to be! However, the Harley collection does feature thousands of quality crystals and 24K gilt on some of the bags.

Judith Leiber Egyptian bags/ Harley

Judith Leiber Couture bags-image via ModaOperandi.com- snapped by my computer as I shopped!

In terms of reviewing the designs, her creations for Judith Leiber are really a great merge of her interests in Egyptology and the brand’s own Egyptian revival/deco influenced styles of the past. I think a serious collector or red carpet maven could do no wrong having one.

Vintage Judith Leiber Crystal Bag

Vintage 70s Leiber crystal bag via our shop. See the bag link for vintage examples.

My anthropology background also relates to her interest in ancient Egypt.  I think she has a whimsical, yet chic approach to the couture bags she’s created.  My favorites bags are the river snake (which actually has a pretty head shape when seen from above), the silver pyramid and the hieroglyph clutch. It features Egyptian hieroglyphics which spell out Judith Leiber as well as Harley. The camel gets an honorable mention for its whimsy! Honestly the winged scarab box clutch isn’t too shabby either! Not to mention the scarab is a sign of rebirth- referring to the Egyptian god which pushed the sun across the sky to be reborn each day. So, it is fitting that this collection highlights a sort of resurgence of interest in Judith Leiber bags.

Finell Bags: The Modern Woman’s Carry All

When I saw this lifestyle brand on instagram, I was mesmerized by their new bag line.  At that time I just couldn’t seem to find anywhere to buy one! So, I’m here to introduce you to them… Finell.co — based in the good old US of A. FINELL describes itself as “a designer and manufacturer of neo luxe housewares and fashion accessories, based in Austin, TX. ‘Great design is what drives every part of the FINELL brand’ explains CEO Rebecca Finell. We celebrate simplicity and smart design. We let go of convention to create new utilities and exciting products that redefine modern design.”

If you’ve seen them, but were in the dark, like me, as to where to buy- guess what? They now have them for sale on their online site.  Who knows exactly why these speak so clearly to me? Maybe my husband’s origami tradition/obsession finally trickled down to me unconsciously, but I am loving these bags.  Quite possibly it’s their simple yet modern lines, chic materials, and perfect basic tones.  The “greige” or grey beige style putty colored bag is perfection. Now Finell bags are works of art and priced that way, they range from $95 for a coin bag to $1095 for the tote and everything in between.  You can find the various locations to see one in person listed on Finell.co, but I can tell you Bergdorf Goodman just started carrying them. If the new accessories line, launching soon, is as good (bracelet shown below), they might have to make accessorizing a full time job.  And like us all after a hot summer day, these bags need to be stored in a cool dry place.

Judy Garland Had All the Best Shoes

rainbowshoe1938

“Rainbow” Sandal cork lined and suede. Created for Judy Garland in 1938. © Museo Salvatore Ferragamo

I remember when I first started out and I saw Salvatore Ferragamo shoes from the 80s, I’m like what’s the big deal? Then I saw the Judy Garland rainbow platform shoe above made in yes 1938, yeah he invented the platform, the cage heel, the wedge- you name he probably did it first. He started making shoes at 9. His items were handmade and until the 60s and when he died he was still designing. He worked in California making a name for himself in the late teens early 1920s, before returning to Italy to start the brand. The Ferragamo museum in Italy is a must see for the history of the fashion shoe. Maybe I need those reissued rainbow platforms? Ferragamo where ever you are, because I’m feeling very over the rainbow today. In 2010 they reissued 80 iconic models in limited quantities sold at select Ferragamo boutiques around the world… Maybe it’s time to pony up. Well, actually now these will be harder to find and more expensive-so probably should have bought them when they reissued the fab shoe in the first place….Better late than never. Let the hunt begin!
