Wonderful rare embellished black wool felt shoe by Maginel. Great silver cut steel style beads and glass colorful beaded accents. Leather sole and simple beige felt inserts over leather. Maganela brand with a sewn in label on the side. By Maginel Wright Barney. Frank Lloyd Wright’s sister. Frank and Maginel (an abbreviated name derived from those of her mother’s sisters, Margaret and Ellen -Maggi Nell for short then becoming Maginel). Circa late 1940’s- 50s. This type with the label is extremely rare.
STATS:Marked 5 1/2 N. Sole measures 9.5″ L X just under 3″ W.
Condition:Very good missing one larger bead at the top. Wear to the sole but not thin. Rest of the shoes are good for their age.
Maginel was inspired to take up needlework after seeing a peasant costume that belonged to her sister-in-law, Olgivanna Wright. Her high fashion custom items soon became very popular. After 1940 she started making embroidered fleece lined felt slippers by hand (due to the shortage of leather during the war, they used felt) using Capezio flats.
